We all know that sunscreen is important. We’ve been told from an early age that we should wear it every day, that it helps prevent skin cancer and signs of early aging, but do we think about what the ingredients in our sunscreen might be doing?
Have you looked at the ingredients in your sunscreen lately? If no, you really should. Recommendations from Environmental Working Group is that we should be using a zinc oxide or titanium oxide sunscreen.
Sunscreens made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide generally score well in EWG’s ratings because:
- They provide strong sun protection with few health concerns.
- They don’t break down in the sun.
- Zinc oxide offers good protection from UVA rays. Titanium oxide less so, but better than most other active ingredients.
So what does this look like? What sunscreens are you left with? There are a lot of choices out there so it can be hard to know which are safe and which are just pretending to be safe. I’ve been using the EWG website or their SkinDeep app to rate my products for over a year now and love having this resource at my fingertips. Here are some of their safer sunscreen choices.
