Half Hearted DIY’ing : All-Purpose Cleaner and First Aid

I’m a half-hearted DIY’er, I’ll admit that. I get these ideas in my head that something would be so great to make but in reality I don’t have the patience and would rather just buy it! LAZY! HA!

Over the past 2+ years I’ve become more and more determined to reduce the toxic ingredient exposure for me and my family and am always look for safer (and easy/cheap) products for our home. Beauty products, food, and home products have been my main focus.  There are a lot of so-called safer products out there so buyer be ware. Do you research (www.ewg.org is a great place to start) and know if what you’re getting is really clean and safe, or if they just claim to be.

The frustration with finding safer products led me to try some DIY items using basic household supplies and my DoTERRA essential oils. I’m loving these and am ready to take on more.

Here are a couple recipes that I’ve tried recently.

  1. All-purpose cleaner –

Mix together in glass spray bottle:
    1/4 cup white vinegar
    2 cups water
10 drops each Citrus oil of choice and melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil

    Spray and clean away!

  2. Boo Boo Spray –

Mix together in small glass bottle:
2 drops each lavender and melaleuca (adjust drops based on age of little ones)
fill rest of bottle with water

I’d love to try others. What are your favorite DIY cleaners/product?

Sunscreen: Naughty or Nice?

FullSizeRender

We all know that sunscreen is important. We’ve been told from an early age that we should wear it every day, that it helps prevent skin cancer and signs of early aging, but do we think about what the ingredients in our sunscreen might be doing?

Have you looked at the ingredients in your sunscreen lately? If no, you really should. Recommendations from Environmental Working Group is that we should be using a zinc oxide or titanium oxide sunscreen.

From EWG.org

Sunscreens made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide generally score well in EWG’s ratings because:

  • They provide strong sun protection with few health concerns.
  • They don’t break down in the sun.
  • Zinc oxide offers good protection from UVA rays. Titanium oxide less so, but better than most other active ingredients.

Information on types of sunscreen

So what does this look like? What sunscreens are you left with? There are a lot of choices out there so it can be hard to know which are safe and which are just pretending to be safe. I’ve been using the EWG website or their SkinDeep app to rate my products for over a year now and love having this resource at my fingertips.  Here are some of their safer sunscreen choices.

A Super Simple DIY Face Oil

IMG_0840

Have you heard of face oils? They’re pretty much the kale of skin care these days and I’m hooked.

At first the thought of putting oil onto my oily skin seemed counterintuitive. Wouldn’t it make it even more oily?? Nope. Not at all. But I have found it provides amazing moisture and actually helps balance out my skin.

I’ve tried a couple different brands but it’s a product that typically isn’t cheap. I realized that I could probably make my own using Jojoba oil and my doTERRA essential oil and am so happy that it tried it.

For more info on Face Oils read here

Here’s what I did for my DIY Face Oil:

Add jojoba oil to container of your choice (I’m using the container from my old face oil bottle)

Add 3-4 drops essential oil of your choice ( I used Lavender and Melaleuca)

Gently shake and rub 1-2 drops into your face before bedtime (or whenever you need a moisture boost)

Benefits of ingredients I used:

Jojoba Oil – great for anti-aging – perfect for all skin types, including acne prone skin) (you can use half argan & half jojoba too

Lavender – great oil for all skin types – healing & calming

Melaleuca – good for acne prone skin,

Other Oil suggestions- Rosemary, chamomile, lemongrass, rose and Frankincense

My 3 MUST have products!

Summer is coming! Are your skin products ready?!?!

Over the past few years I have made an intentional effort to switch to safer products. There are tons of yucky chemical lurking in the products you use every day that can cause hormonal changes, have been linked to cancer and even reproductive concerns. No thank you!

And lets face it, I’m also not getting any younger so I’m looking for ways to ‘age gracefully’ and stop further damage to my skin (If I could I would tell my younger self, WEAR MORE SUNCREEN, and don’t worry about what it does to you hair – wear a hat outdoors!)

So here are just a few of my favorite products and why:

  1. SUNSCREEN – Seriously though. I’m confinced that this, Hydration and moisturizers are the fountain of youth. Wear it daily. Wear it more. Research says that we should get 20 min of sun exposure sans sunscreen but think about the amount of time you’re outside daily. Add it all up. And all the places that are exposed. Basically, wear more sunscreen. I’m obsessed with Beautycounter’s sunscreen stick. Goes on easy, feels great and it’s a safe non -nano zinc based sunscreen so I feel good using it on me and Jack! (more info on safe kind of sunscreen Sunscreen Guide
  2. Face Oil – I heard about the magic of face oils just over a year ago when I was introduced to Beautycounter. More info on the magic here: Clean Face Oils
I love Beautycounter’s oil  and think it’s amazing. I’m also starting to making my own oil just using Argan Oil and DoTERRA essential oil!
  3. Eye Cream – Tired mom. Enough said 😉 But eye cream is great for the ahem, delicate skin around your eyes. After years of not wearing sunglasses, and well living life, my eyes could use a little cream! AND the best part about Beautycounter’s Eye Perfecting eye cream is that it helps reduce the pufiness that comes with tired mama eyes! It’s a keeper for my routine for sure! Eye Perfector Eye Cream

What are YOUR favorite, must have products?? Let me know!

Why I want to clean up my products | Creating a Non-Toxic Home

I don’t want to be alarmist but there’s a lot of crap out there. There is little to no regulation on the products that we use on our bodies and in our homes. They have found lead, formaldehyde, and other known chemicals linked to asthma, cancer and hormone disruptors in the products that we use every day.

I’ve been slowly cleaning up the products we use in our house. Since having a baby my whole world has changed and I’m fiercely protective of him and what’s around him. I’ve read a lot about cleaning up the home and the effects of small amounts of chemicals, day in and day out, and how they can have lasting effects on your health. I began to get discouraged at the products out there claiming to be safe and tired of researching every single thing I buy.

Then enters Beautycounter!  A personal care and cosmetics company dedicated to providing safe products that beautifully perform! I love to show this quick video about our mission to get safe products into the hands of everyone: https://youtu.be/xc5J1A37bKE

It’s a company I’m really proud of. I love their products and how beautifully they work, but even more I LOVE what they’re doing to move the market towards safer products.
