I love getting going slowly in the mornings. Waking early (ish) and reading with coffee, taking my time before having to rush anywhere is really one of my favorite things. I enjoy my slow moving mornings with this guy where we can just relax and play and not have to rush off anywhere! Really are some of my favorite times with this kid and I savor each morning we get like this. (He loves taking it easy and reading in the morning’s too!)
I can be an all or nothing type of person. I don’t feel comfortable with grey and want a right or wrong way to do things. (Hello struggle with parenting….”wide range of normal” anyone???) But I work on this and am REALLLLYY trying to remember it’s “grace over guilt” as my favorite online pilates instructor says ( check her out: http://www.thebalancedlifeonline.com)
So with that said I can get overwhelmed by all the information out there about safe and unsafe products and food and what to do about it. Ryan and I have been transitioning to a (hopefully) safer lifestyle over the past few years. For various reasons we have eliminated most of the dairy and wheat from our diet, try to buy mostly organic foods, and watch what products we are using. We have read up on lots of different toxins and ways to keep them out of our house and bodies. I try and a take a ‘baby steps’ approach to removing this and choosing safer options, but as I mentioned before I’m an all or nothing type and can get caught up in it not being ALL done immediately.
Once we had a baby it seemed even more important to make changes that were safer for all of us. Now research might come out in a few years that says we’re all crazy and these things are not that bad for us, but it just seems logical to NOT put too many chemicals in our bodies….right??
However, there is so much information out there about what’s bad and what’s good that it can be hard to determine what is reliable and what we want to make a priority in our household.
I love the Environmental Working Group (http://www.ewg.org/) as a resource for helping us pick safer products. You can research products, research and tips on their website and they even have handy apps for personal care products and the “Dirty Dozen” in foods.
We’re still working on what this means for our family and what the priorities will be (this is not the cheaper way of doing things), but we are committed to trying to make our home a cleaner and safer place. Here are just a few of the goals/priorities for our family (Adjusting and changing as we learn, grow and adjust priorities). What about you? Ways you’re choosing to live cleaner/healthier?
Healthier/Cleaner living goals for our family:
1. Meatless Monday (or meatless one day a week)
2. Organic + Hormone free + Minimally Processed + Seasonal (always dirty dozen) Foods
3. Greener household products and beauty products (Using EWG + Beautycounter + Honest Co products and resources)
4. Less Plastic! Replace with glass options
5. Get rid of non-stick cookware – switch to Cast Iron
6. Simplify wardrobe (Anyone heard of a capsule wardrobe?)
7. Reduce Paper
8. Clutter free / Small/Simple living
Well, it has been a busy couple of months and I haven’t posted in a while. I am 30 weeks pregnant and feeling it. It’s amazing the difference a few weeks makes and starting to feel large and in charge! Praying for a safe remainder of the pregnancy and a healthy baby boy in July!
A few things we have been up to:
We have been getting ready for our little one and trying to soak in every little moment we can as a household of two. We moved down the street to a two bedroom place vastly increasing our living space! Ryan graduated received his brown belt in Jiu Jitsu and graduated from SJSU with his Masters. I have just been working and getting ready for a few months off once JR arrives, amazed that a human life is growing inside me and have basically just been getting bigger.
I’ve been blessed with two baby showers so far and have had fun celebrating my soon-to-be new SIL (and looking forward to their wedding in the next month) It has been a time of celebrating for sure!
Recently Ryan and I just got back from a little vacation in southern California. We are both lovers of the ocean and feel most calm and at peace when near the water. We spent two days doing nothing but relaxing on the beach and two more days traveling around southern California seeing friends and family. Such a great time and were thankful to have the opportunity to squeeze so many wonderful things into one trip.
Now it’s crunch time with about 9 weeks to go! We need to assemble furniture and get baby boy’s room all set up and ready to welcome him home! I know I’ll be busy once he comes but I’m looking forward to a few months off of work and having Ryan and I get to know our little guy!
If you’d have asked me if this is where I’d be 4 years ago when I moved from Orange County to San Jose I would have thought you were crazy. Amazing to see where God can take you in such a short time!
Shower with my college girls. 15 years of friendship and about 15 kids between us.
Shower celebrating my amazingly beautiful soon-to-be SIL Michelle. Can not WAIT until it’s official and she’s a Mrs, Bacon.
Seriously blessed to spend my life with this man. He was worth the wait and we had a great couple of days just sitting on the beach, dreaming about where we’re headed next!
Enjoyed an amazing shower with family on my dad’s side. They’re a crazy bunch and I miss not getting to see them more. Sweet friends also came and helped ‘shower’ us with love. Thank you ALL!
Enjoyed spending time in Oceanside with amazing people. Got to hang out with good friends and watch a story of redemption lead this couple to marriage and a beautiful wedding!
We have been blessed with another year of sweet memories and good times. This year held times with precious friends (celebrating love, babies, and lasting friendships), quality family events, and new beginnings. As Ryan is finishing Grad school this May we are looking forward to seeing where the next phase of life takes the Bacon’s! Merry Christmas to all and we love you! Here’s to even more cherished times in the year ahead!
Love, The Bacon’s
Fall might be my favorite season. I love summer for the longer days and fun times it brings, but I’m not a fan of being hot. Fall is great because it cools off but you can still enjoy being outside, and the colors are beautiful.
Last weekend the hubs and I took the opportunity to go out and hike in a couple of our favorite areas, marveled at the history in the surroundings, and talked and dreamed together. (Not really sure how these old cars got lost in the hills where we were, or why I hadn’t noticed them in the many hikes we’ve done here before..)
Guys, I’ve completely fallen off the wagon. I mean I have NOT taken a photo every day in October and I’m feeling kind-of bad about it. But I’m extending myself grace and looking back at the reasons I adopted a ‘photo a day’ challenge for 2013. 1. To experience gratitude in the simple blessings around me daily 2. To practice photography by taking more pictures.
I can say that even though I did not succeed in my challenge to take a picture each day this year I HAVE succeeded in completing my two reasons for the challenge.
I am surrounded each and every day with things that make me stop, smile and be thankful for the amazing gifts. 1. laying on the couch on a sat morning reading 2. spending a lazy Friday night with a man that loves me and shows me his love daily 3. time spent with family and friends 4. a job that I enjoy at least 80% of the time ……and the list goes on. Sure we’re still living in a small space and are not sure what the next year or beyond holds for us, but right now…today…we’re thankful for where we are!!
October started off fast and furious and thankfully has slowed down into a more relaxed pace. Here are a few images of the beautiful blessings of the month:
Ryan and I just got back from celebrating my sweet, dear, best friend Nicole’s wedding weekend. It was such an honor and a treat to be there and a part of her special day. You could see Nicole in the details and events of the day and it was perfect! Their love and happiness shone and I wish them all the best! Love and marriage are such a gift and I’m excited to see what God will bring here.
As a BONUS I got to spend time with some of my favorite people! The years have taken us many different places, but we still come together like nothing has changed. They’re my “home” in a lot of ways and I’m grateful for the times to get to share them with Ryan and see where lives have taken all of us.
I didn’t get too many photos taken but here are just a few from the weekend. Smiles all around!
